Project 3 - Trivial Repartee!
The pre text to this piece is that no clip in it is chosen arbitrarily, and though it might seem that we are expressing a position regarding a controversy, this piece does NOT represent our positions. Its merely intended to be a satirical representation of many discussions going on in our society today.
Once again, it is not meant to be about Kristina or my position on controversial issues.
Lastly, regarding the direction that went into it: I am a person that really enjoys disjointed space and/or time in movies and books. Examples like Timeline, Pulp Fiction, The Matrix, Inception, might be familiar references. Herein, I have implemented some of that kind of integration of multiple plot elements. Not so sophisticated, but just know that there are multiple threads that are woven together, and yet when they are presented, still relate directly to the clip they are preceding or following.
Enjoy.

My Project two, finally done, thank you Rob for your support.
Hope you all enjoy it as much as I did making it. It's more about the story I'm trying to tell, than it is about the quality of my clips. I hope you can appreciate what I am saying. White Balance, Lighting, etc...those were not the first concerns...the story line was. :)

Project Three: I Had a Dream
Hey everyone! I have really had a good time with all of you creative people this semester. Thanks so much Professor Morris for the fantastic class. It was so much more than I expected or could have hoped for! I think the way to stay fresh with your creativity is to constantly challenge yourself, and not be afraid of being challenged. An open mind is also key; a closed mind is a bar which prohibits any new learning from ever occurring. I must admit, mine was a not completely open back in September. Thanks again prof. for making it interesting!
In this work, my idea was to compile clips from various sources to tell a story. My story was about a man who had a dream. He stayed up too late, and filled his mind with too much digital stimulation. His over-active imagination is then ready to take him into sci-fi city! I had to really cut a lot on the one movie I used to keep the montage fresh and lively. I did some shooting at home and as usual, my lovely wife assisted me. I used some of the techniques we learned this semester to assemble this montage, and I think it tells a compelling story.

Project 2: Resisting Societal Influence - Song of My Life
Greeting all,
My video, while seemingly simple is far more than I even expected it to be. There were moments during it's production that wrought deep emotions from within me as I played and scrubbed and played and tweaked.
There is not a single image that doesn't have significant meaning and reference with respect to my life. And, even as I present it today, I feel like I've only touched upon this project that, if I were to give it my all, would cost me months at least, and contain a million images.
In any case, please attempt to see the story...it is of my life, and far greater than simply a reference to era gone by!

Hawkish ...
This is a random project I did, upon arriving home from work. I saw something interesting, grabbed my cam and tripod, took some footage, until I the opportunity was gone... Then, I ran upstairs (literally) and downloaded and one hour later...viola...
I would have put more than an hour effort into it if I had gotten more footage...but check it out...

MY VIDEO - THE BADDEST
here is my video project.
Don't judge to hard, this was plan F . All my other plans ( which i had alot ) had fell through. So I ended up walking to the dance studio and running into a group of dancers hanging outside of their dance class. I happen to have my video camera and tripod , and after getting the nerve I asked them. They said yes, so we started shooting. I actually had more footage from different angles but lost it because, my phone broke and I hadn't send it to email. SO I had to work with what I had. I also didn't have the whole song. Just a cut the dancers sent me , and it started Right on the dance moves start. So I had to add music , so that's why the whole beginning thing was there, just a filler.
Anyway , given a second chance and if the universe just doesn't hate me , I think I would do a much better job. So look for in the near future, a good dance music video !
ok , here it goes .....

Project 1: "One Fine Day"
Greetings all!
Performance art eh? whut? LoL ... Well, one thing Kristina and I found out is that the craft of performing or acting is not to be taken lightly. We, not being musicians, dancers, or other performance arts skilled, tried our hand at acting...we were going to do a Scary Movie type short, then we switched to a Blair Witch type, then something else...all were drastic failed attempts. So we decided on a simple, funny-ish, depiction of a day in our lives...
The early part of the video is my work, the ska section is principally directed by Kristina...so you can see that we are dynamically different people, but we really enjoy our differences, and well...here it is...
BTW: I dropped a clip that tied together the walk with getting back to the laundry...I apologize. Also, I had some slightly different ideas on what to do at the Fitness Center, but thought there would be too many cuts.
Also, see if you can determine which clips were made with my DSLR and which were made with our Cell phones.

Project One
My idea for this work was to do something similar to a documentary. I wanted to reveal what it is like coming together in the rehearsal hall as musicians to work up a new song. This is my band doing a cover of an old Talking Heads tune.
I also attempted to employ some of the techniques we have learned about in class. I was especially interested in the concept of Metric and Rhythmic Montage, both with cuts and with special effects. I also explored the use of Overtonal Montage near the end of the piece. I did this by taking the metaphor of the song's title to culmination physically, by means of the use of a special effect with a clip I 'borrowed' from the internet. I had a great time building this movie and it took many, many hours. It is 7:34 long, so I have posted an HD version and an SD version. Use your discression according to your processor's speed. Enjoy.

Metaphors on Vision
I love the
continuation of the theme of the ‘language’ of cinema. So much can be
communicated by the visual aspect of the art alone. It can bring about the
emotion and deep-seated feelings of an individual while leaving him unaware
that it has done so. He believes that this ‘language’ is still yet unexplored,
much like the West Indies in the days of Columbus. I did not understand this
concept on September 5th of this year. Now I begin to examine the
philosophy, and to embrace it.
I certainly do
not agree with everything these artists stipulate, for instance in the
‘Metaphors on Vision’ piece, I find he has gone too far when he claims that “It
is a time haunted by sexual sterility yet almost universally incapable of
perceiving the phallic nature of every destructive nature of itself.” Perhaps
that sentiment is not universal merely due to the fact that it is untrue. When
writers or speakers use the concepts of ‘never’ and ‘always’ I almost certainly
will fill with reservations. This is the beauty of knowledge and learning, you
take what you can use, and leave the rest.

Metaphors on Vision
I felt that this reading was kind of difficult to
understand. What I think it is
suggesting is that when a person has an open mind, allows his mind to explore
and imagine beyond conventional limits, he will have a deeper, richer, more
meaningful experience of life and the world.
I think it’s an inspiring reading. I find it kind of fascinating and it causes
me to think about perhaps how I view things in life. I have to ask myself, “Have I been “seeing”
and “hearing” every bit that could have been seen or heard?
Metaphors On Vision
Metaphors On Vision
I think it was explaining, its wonder of how life would be without boundaries. How we would see the world in the view point of a child. Everything is open , innocent. Nothing is off limits or unappropiate because in their eyes there are no rules.
Fear is boundaries. Fear is walls. When you have fear of something , your not completely open to that thing , because somewhere there is hesitancy, or doubt, and if you let it overtake you , it will stop you from doing things.
I can sort of relate to the article's viewpoint in some ways. I am a christian . My mindset , actions, perception of things , just way of living is based off of my beliefs and values in the christian faith. One day , after thinking , well actually in a angry rant . After having a confrontation with someone , i was angrily re-living the episode in my head, and noticing the different things we both did and thought about even though, their was somethings that I WANTED to do I didn't because of the person I was. And in that moment , I thought, Who would be If I wasn't a christian? All of my values and morals and reasons for the way I act are because of my background. I knew what was right and wrong . SO i was going on (IN MY HEAD) about how they should be glad that I am a christian . And that the reason I didn't cuss them out and, act on the thought's that i wanted to was because of who i was . Basically I was saying I would not be the same person if I didn't believe in what I did. It shapes my way of living. So in some things where I might have gravitated to or did, because of what i believe or stand for I don't , and I am aware of that. ......if Any of that makes since :)

Metaphors on Vision
I have to admit, this piece really struck deeply within me. Upon Reading Stan Brakhage’s “Metaphors on Vision” I felt sad. I realized the truth in the idea and felt for certain that I want to find that perception which I have lost due to conforming to the metaphors that have been imposed upon me.
I feel even more inspired to find the connection to the artist I feel is buried deep inside, so that I may once again perceive the world as the day I first saw it. Vision is a gift, we are born with that according to the article, becomes lost … This is my read of “Metaphors on Vision.”
~Rob
Metaphors on Vision
Working as an artist myself both within print media as well as digital...I'm often floored by the way that someone paints a picture within whatever medium and a lot of that is based on people's influences rather its film, music, art, theater, etc and that's a beautiful thing...its the tapestry of art itself. I used to frequent poetry slams as a performer and metaphors are a huge part of the poetic world so when I started reading this my mind started relating the cinematic experience both in front of and behind the camera to how natural it is for people to focus in on something and relate it to something completely alien to the outside world yet everyone can understand what the meaning of it all is...that's the nature of metaphors...its a shame that people don't open their eyes enough to see them.

Metaphors on Vision
Every person has different perceptions on what they see. When an artist expresses themselves visually, people may view it in a way that not even the artist themselves has. That is what this reading is about. Where you come from and what you have experienced in life makes you see things in certain ways. If you are not familiar with what you see then your view will be something different than someone who is familiar. That is not always good. We now seem to live in a time where society is sucked into and too preoccupied with unimportant crap that they don't see what they should be seeing.

Exercise 2 - Control Room Scene
Starring Kristina Phillips, CoStarring Robert Phillips
We didn't get too creative.
We decided on two angles, but utilized a varied focal length on one of the shot angles to deal with the fact that its two people making a three person scene. We used sound effects to assist in the perception that John Arnold is still sitting at the computer working.
We also recorded each scene essentially end to end (of the script) so as to have more options for editing cuts into the final. But because the script and segments of video are short, the cuts are kind of short...so I did try to minimize the number of cuts we included.
Thanks for watching.

Comment: Kino-eYe...
I found this piece very interesting, principally regarding the artist's deliberate sense of intent to exploit the ease at which people could be manipulated via the medium he was discovering the power of.
It was almost childlike. Like a child who has just discovered they could lie. Conversation of the darker inner self.
I tend to believe that people conspire to manipulate to great extents...using all mediums of communication, all mediums of influence. This is just an example of some of the thoughts that are behind the conspiracies and acts.

Kino-Eye
It seems like montage is a good when you are trying to teach people or force people to think in a cretin type of way. Using media as a way to brainwash people. His style seems to fit with the times he was living in.
Kino-Eye
I would say the reading this week is much more tame than what we had read previously. That being said, I would not call this completely a docile piece of literature. It first started off saying that the camera is such an amazing piece of tech which can capture the beauty of our world with which our human eyes could not. With the camera, you don't have to worry about time flow or positions since the lens will create your "world" for you. As it goes on though, it portrays they Kino Eye as basically all the best form of media. Theatre was inferior since the only view one could get of it was from where you sat and only there. The camera would allow you to view each point of the show, instantly moving from one to another without having to pause, but a instant transition. I do agree that the camera could portray a story that one could not normally see with just your eyes but this piece just gives the camera too much credit.
THE LEGACY OF THE KINO EYE
Interesting reading.
We are looking at making the camera better. it is amazing to see how far the technology has come from when this was printed. We are not taking away from theater. it is a different side of storytelling.
Just my thoughts.

THE LEGACY OF THE KINO EYE
After reading about the Kinoks and gaining a deeper understanding of what the kino-eye...I think I get what they were trying to accomplish which is to call forth a true cinematic revolution with the camera eye (kino eye) being the harbinger of truth-because the human eye does indeed have its limitations. On many levels they wanted to document the truths of the world and felt that staged productions were merely lies that humanity tells itself to feel "ok" with the world.
The rejection of traditional cinema by way of forcing the camera lens to become the new third eye was controversial, mainly because humans tend to put themselves at the center of everything and if not "man" than a man-made "God" and now you have a machine if you will that was created by "man" being proclaimed as the third-quid or shall I say the missing link between "man" and "god" so from a philosophical standpoint the Kinoks were placing the "machine" before all else. And, now we have an untold amount of drones equipped with kino eyes documenting our every thought and action on a daily basis, and that's scary. Are Drones the legacy of the Kinoks? In a true communistic sense they very well could be. Maybe I'm giving it to much thought, but then again maybe I've given it just the right amount of thought.
If the kino eye was meant to explore humanity in the raw and document our actions and reactions than drones are in deep sadly the legacy that the Kinoks have left behind rather they ever envisioned the lens to be used outside of film or not. The all seeing eye is no longer "God" but "man" who uses the "machine" as its weapon....I've seen enough Terminator films to know how well that turns out once the machine opens up its kino-eye and becomes self-aware!
I also think that the Kinoks would hate Fox News and how they use the documentary film style to manipulate the public on a daily basis.

The Futurist Manifesto...
I probably should have researched the period and the society of the person that wrote the Manifesto...Of course we can take into account the era in which this article was created, but I still hear words and ideas similar to those found in the reading, being expressed in essence all the time, all of my life by people from many different walks of life.
I simply see the writing as possibly expressions that are simple in terms of their true source or intent. Expressions of disenchantment, poetic expression of a desire to break from traditions that can be stifling.
Even today, there are anarchists, and there are youth who are easily taken to join these communities of thought...I've met some of them...they speak very similarly to the writer of The Futurist Manifesto...but I don't think they are serious about the destruction...though I know some could easily stumble onto the wrong path. Sometimes youth, and even some adults (probably somewhat stunted in maturity, or simply very narrow in their view of how important order is), will spout words that sound like those.
On another plane, I see this expression as possibly words of a frustrated, obviously intelligent, but still developing mind. Or perhaps they are the expression of a mind of an individual that might have been stifled by the standards that require sooo much conformancy in order to be accepted in intellectual or fine arts communities... In eras past, SO many artists were required to study in specific schools or under certain masters in order to have their talents respected or appreciated. A person who's dream is deferred can become deeply frustrated and that frustration could become anger, it could even fester into hatred.

The Futurist Manifesto
I have mixed feelings on the article. Some of their reasons for rebelling I can somewhat agree with but, their way of going about it is completely wrong. There is ways for making things happen and their way, is not the smartest in my opinion.
1st of all, What is up with all of the "destroying museums and libraries"? (erasing the past) You shouldn't have to destroy the past to make a future. You always should have your past to remind you of how you got to the present and to help you determine how you want to shape your future.
Next, the people that are leading this seem like very "Interesting " people. They are the who I like to call the " ride or die " friend. The person that is down for whatever .Everyone has one. That person that you can call at anytime and they will drop whatever their doing and be there. Most of the time you call them when some sort of conflict is happening. They are usually very outspoken and fearless. In other words, in a confrontation you want them on YOUR side ! Anyway this person usually act on emotions. Which is great at times but you also have to THINK . Every action has a re-action. And in their explanations they kept saying what they were "going to do " but , they never said what was going to happen next. That is when the danger comes. When acting on the now emotions you don't think of the later effects. SO, while they right now have plans, they really haven't thought past the present day. Which is kind of funny saying that they are "Futurist's". ;)
Anyway , I think their motives are right . There saying it's "Time For A Change". They want to "Break The Mode" , Think Outside The Box" . They want to stop letting traditions and habits or "What Always Happen" or " It's The Way We Do Things " be the building points for their futures.

The Futurist Manifesto
I had to reread the first few paragraphs to try to get an understanding but once I reached about halfway through the first page, it became clearer as to what the message was. To me, this seems to be more anarchic than a movement. It talks about destroying libraries and museums with "your pickaxes, your axes
and hammers and wreck, wreck the venerable cities." What this manifesto is telling you to do is basically dismantle and destroy anything that houses historical information or symbols of a prior age to your own without regard. Now I understand that the saying is don't dwell on the past but all I'm reading is to erase the past as if it were a flat tire hindering progress from one goal to another. I also understand, however, that this was written back in 1909 when times were different. They had different worries, ethics and technology to ours'. That does not change the fact that we could both recognize anarchy when we see it.

The Futurist Manifesto
I found it most interesting reading.
I do love the idea of "sing the love of danger." I used to do MMA fighting and Mauy Thai. I am accustom to elements of danger and having the warriors heart. I do not like the idea of Exalting aggressive action. We know of the consequences of the drums of war.
I hate the idea of "We will destroy the museums, libraries, academies of every kind, will fight moralism, feminism, every opportunistic or utilitarian cowardice" 1st as a women I take offence to the idea of fighting feminism. There are many women warriors such as Mulan from China, Kaihime from Japan Joan of Arc and many others through history that have put a sword into the pweople that told them what they can and can not do. Losing the arts and such is losing a piece of our humanity and culture.
Just my thought.

Welcome Richland Video Artists!
Hello to everyone in the Video Art/Digital Video class in the multimedia department at Richland! This is the course blog for this semester, which will act as a kind of extended conversation about the readings we do outside of class.
There will be theoretical readings assigned some weeks (check the syllabus to see what's due), and the following week we will discuss the reading in class. To advance our discussion, you will post responses here.
Please do so the day or night before class so I have a chance too look over it and include your comments in our discussion.
You should also read the responses of your fellow students. You may respond to them in the comments section if you like. Please feel free to post pictures, video, links, and other items that will advance the conversation. Looking forward to a new semester with you.
